(My first post about PJO on Tumblr!! :D sorry for the awful English and possible grammatical mistakes. English is my third language 😅 I try my best))
Alright alright hear me out
Hear me out
I remember like, somewhere in the early PJO series Percy was a bit uncomfortable after being called 'Perseus'. I might be going crazy. That might just have been a dream... I'll just come back to this post when I find the evidence in the book... But anyways
What if Mr D calling Percy jackson is so much more than just a meme? What if it's a well written thing with a deeper meaning??
Hear me out.
Percy was not comfortable with being called Percy, right? And Dionysus, being the god of like, insanity and madness which originated from like, MIND, right? And I don't know, since nico goes to therapy sessions with Mr D in Trials of Apollo, Perhaps Mr D is also well versed with other matters of mind like trauma?? Perhaps he KNEW what Percy's triggers were?? I mean, this might sound crazy but he MIGHT have known somehow. And therefore never called Percy by even his right name.
Maybe this is why Mr. D keeps saying Percy's name wrong so as to not intimidate him???
If I find no evidence for this in the books imma just call this my headcannon.
Who knows, like, we know Gabe is lowkey abusive, right? I mean, I don't think lowkey is even the right word for it... And Gabe keeps calling Percy insulting names like 'Brain boy'. What if Gabe reserves the name 'Perseus' for like, super rare occassions (to let Percy know he really screwed up) like some manipulators do? And what if when Percy hears the name 'perseus' at first his Brain right away thinks he's in trouble for a moment because of that??
((Like, fr if I actually find the evidence I mentioned before, and get the confirmation that I'm not like, crazy, I swear I'll be so damn happy- but right now I legit think this was like, a fever thought at this point. I'll actually write this in a better language once I get the lines I'm looking for in the books.))
#pjo hoo toa#percy jackon and the olympians#greek mythology#percy jackson headcanon#percy jackson#gabe ugliano#dionysus#mr d pjo#headcannons#pjo books#wholesome#trials of apollo#heroes of olympus#if this is real mr d is so sweet for being so considerate

god why is there never a perfect option, I have found two places where I can buy the Nimona comic book (yes only two and one is in a different country because idk screw availability of anything ig) but one is in Czech and shipping costs almost one half of the price of the book and the other place is fucking German Amazon where it is actually in English and I would get free shipping but it costs two times more than the one in Czech Republic and has those disgusting sticker graphics on it
#Or I coul get the czech one on my own because bus tickets cost actually a little bit less than shipping which is ironic#but I am not really a fan of comic books in czech they always sound a little bit off#and I like getting books in original if I know the language#but on the other hand I do not want to order anything from amazon#and the stickers are so fucking big oh my god#and I am broke so#uhh idk#I could possibly wait like a month because then I will need to go to the town where the bookshop is anyway#but what if it gets sold out by then#fuck idk someone help T-T#nimona

not to be obnoxious on main but classic literature is not global literature. it's western literature at best
#not to vague but like. name one book from my country i dare you guys.#sorry this set of posts just makes me so fucking mad. like i'm also guilty of this because my ass can't speak any other language but#books of importance from other countries outside of the western hemisphere. especially if theyre in a language which is not english#go largely ignored by the western world at large despite their importance to their countries of origin#and its a double standard to have to expect to know like. for the most part the literature of native english-speaking or european#countries. when i'm certain a lot of these people don't know any of our literature or their importance to us#its so fucking pretentious. like i wont say im not guilty of it as a monolingual english speaker so that list of classic literature#is whats most accessible to me but like christ. get your head out of your ass. they didnt even say something bad about the book. holy fuck#sorry im just so fucking pissed. and i know these people are white or some form of american canadian whatever#im not denying the importance of the book in question its just Your Experiences Are Not Universal. why dont you respect our literature#before demanding the same respect for 'yours'#'uhh but i didnt know about those bools and their history-' YEAH BECAUSE THEY DIDNT HAPPEN IN YOUR PART OF THE WORLD. ITS THE SAME OVER HERE#BUT IM NOT CALLING YOU OUT FOR IT AM I? EVEN THOUGH THOSE BOOKS ARE THE CENTER OF A MAJOR HISTORICAL EVENT IN MY COUNTRY#im so pissed.#woe be upon ye

Has anyone read Fourth Wing translated into another language and did you agree with the Violet/Violence nickname translations in said language? Because I'm reading through the Bulgarian version rn and they. Fucking transliterated it??? With a FOOTNOTE??? Explaining what Violence means in English??? Even though it's not a one-time thing but a recurring nickname and the use of Sudden English Word in-text in what's meant to be flirty, charged and tender moments later is fucking jarring??? I am Shaking With Rage.
#fourth wing#the empyrean#like okay I get it translation is subjective and localising puns and other wordplay is nigh impossible#and even if you localize the terms there will always be a portion of the readers upset with you for 'changing it'#but that's the nature of translation. because translation is also a type of Fucking Art#you could have done something clever with it! something playful and sweet and a lil mocking and flirty#and then if you're so damn upset about losing the Violet/Violence thing just put THAT in a FOOTNOTE#explaining the intentions of the original text and why you've chenged it#this is like if in Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets voldemort rearranges his name for Harry to spell out#'I am Lord Voldemort' but use his English name so the letters don't fit and then in a footnote explain that#oh well IN ENGLISH IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE- like stfu??? are you or are you not a translator?? do you or do you not know#how to use creative liberties when faced with a phrase that doesn't have a direct translation from one language to another???#wtf are they teaching you in class how to become google translate??? don't translate the words translate The Vibes! The Rhetorical Devices!!#istg this is fucking ridiculous I almost quit the damn book over this I will never psychologically recover

imaginary book: “The Ruined Idylls of Calomar”, low fantasy (quite obscure, authorship disputed; philologists suspect the first draft was written in a Celtic or Semitic language in the late 19th or early 20th century.)
The Ruined Idylls of Calomar by A.E. Mann
This haunting work of fantasy claims to be the journals of an unnamed scholar living in exile after the fall of the hidden lands of Calomar. Once a thriving, peaceful, highly civilized culture, its glory was brought low by the pride, greed, and wrath of kings, scholars, explorers and warriors who fought for glory, power, and honor, until its final destruction by a dark, nameless weapon left only a scant handful of survivors to escape and tell the tale. In haunting language, the narrator writes of Calomar's glory and intrigue, its final fall, and his irresistible yet doomed attempts to return to his lost homeland and learn what, if anything, has survived.
#imaginary book recs#answered asks#this one was recommended to me by a friend whose tastes are much more cultured than mine#as in she's reading gormenghast and lord dunsany while i read mediocre self-published fairy tale retellings#i read the gutenberg version right on my computer while procrastinating#the description sounds more generic than it actually is#it's like a bridge between those victorian explorer atlantis lost land tales and a more modern take on fantasy#i wouldn't be surprised if it was an influence on tolkien or at least i suspect they're drawing from similar traditions#these people are much less noble and the narrative rather sadder than tolkien's#but i was still enthralled#sometimes you need to read about people who are better than you#and sometimes you need to watch the intrigues of people who fight and fail#and this one fits well into the latter tradition without losing that sense of wonder and goodness that undergirds good fantasy#the language is kind of dense but once you get going i found it rather readable#you have to be in the right mood and fortunately i found it at the right time#i'd like to see if i could find an annotated version one day#i don't know as much as i'd like about the origins and authorship and all those things like that#and at the very least i suspect there are worlds of references that i'm missing

don carlos by friedrich schiller is the most wild thing i've read all year and i'm only in act 2
#this is giving me flashbacks to when i read the winter's tale and i was literally slamming my fists and emphatically shaking the book#because i just could not believe the level of DRAMA i was reading (and the craft with which it was written)#i just closed act 2 scene 3 and im like GIRRRRLLLLL#princess of eboli im rooting for you#nobody tell me if something shitty happens w her im having a good time right now#tales from diana#up until act 2 scene 2 i was getting phaedra-meets-prince hal (of the henry iv plays) vibes#but then those next two scenes were CRAAAAZY#and i should mention phaedra by racine is one of my favorite plays#schiller also has a beautiful skill at language if the translations are doing him any justice#i dont know german so im not reading the originals naturally but just. the edition i have. the verse is so beautiful#i also read his mary stuart this year and it was also great but im losing my mind at don carlos#i was intimidated by this play too though bc it's nearly 200 pages in my copy of his works! which is a p big book#but OOOHHHHH my god#im just over 1/3rd through the play and i cant imagine how it gets any wilder#but wooooow. WOWWWW#schiller might be the first non-anglophone writer ive read who ive seen called 'the shakespeare of his culture'#and i actually felt that the comparison like. did justice.#the intensity ive felt reading these 2 schiller plays are very much how i feel reading the greatest shakespeare plays#not that the greatest/most acclaimed writers of other languages ive read arent AS GREAT as shakespeare#but like. molière i'll use as an example bc i love what i've read of him.#he's the most globally well-known french writer of verse plays but that doesn't make him like shakespeare.#he's very much in his own camp of artistic genius. his craft is also very different. the resulting products are super unique#from what is typical of a shakespeare play.#schiller's style AT LEAST FROM THE TWO PLAYS IVE READ very much have the same depth of character#complexity of plot#and grace of verse.#im obsessed! king!

How can I have started a book, read the blurb on the back, the title and 30 pages, but only when I’m tracking my progress on the StoryGraph and only finding an English version of the book when searching by isbn I realise that the book is in fact in English and not in Dutch as I’d been convinced?!?!
#I also doubted for a second whether I read little thieves last week in English or Dutch#but it was English because I was thinking about how I did not vibe with how the English handled the German like words#I think this is the second time this happened to me with a book but damn#I am really fucked up now#this confuses me so much#I’m blaming the library’s Nieuw sticker#oh and the blurb the library put on the inside is also in Dutch#so it didn’t even click when I first read the English blurb on the back and then the Dutch blurb inside#I am not observant#my thought process was: huh weird the title in the app is english#checks the title on my book: is in English#me: huh weird but then sometimes they don’t translate titles#*checks the blurb* *is also in English*#*frantically checks the inside* *is also in English*#me: …#just like I kinda often read bits of text where I could not tell you the language right?#like I Google something and I go to Wikipedia and sometimes that’s Dutch Wikipedia and sometimes it’s English#and I don’t really notice or care#but now I was CONVINCED I was reading in Dutch#and that’s what’s getting me here#if you ask me what language this Wikipedia page was I would just not know#but if you’d asked me what language my book was I’d have said Dutch with full conviction#but it’s not????#i made an original post#part time booklr#books#reading#part time langblr

I think trying to tackle the whole book is the struggle. I had a Cosette picture book as a kid that started with her being dropped off and ended with her walking away with Jean valjean in her new clothes and carrying her doll. I loved it so much and then my mum told me it was part of a bigger book so I read all her bits in the book skipping any long descriptions. I was a kid so I only read to the end of her schooling in the convent. And then over the years I would go back and read more about fantine and then Cosette and Marius and then finally Jean valjean bits. And by that time I actually found the sewer descriptions interesting although I still skip the Waterloo lol
oh I've definitely read other chunks of the book! just regarding a literary white whale, reading the brick the full way through is something i DO want to do.
#certified protectcosette original#answered#anonymous#i know your hearts in a good place but i'm gonna be honest I don't love being told by someone else why i'm struggling#the struggle is that i have adhd and have to put more concentration into reading long blocks of text#i've read 30 books this year and probably 26 ot them were audiobooks bc i have a better time processing literature that way#and books with older language also just tend to take more mental power to get through. i've been reading peide and prejudice since february#and i've only gotten like 46% through. i can only read small bits at a time#and the brick is nothing BUT tiny text and paragraph walls and old language. there's very little dopamine reward#tell me what you like to do to read les mis but don't tell me why i'm struggling? does that make sense for you?

look, I know I've talked about this essay (?) before but like,
If you ever needed a good demonstration of the quote "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic", have I got an exercise for you.
Somebody made a small article explaining the basics of atomic theory but it's written in Anglish. Anglish is basically a made-up version of English where they remove any elements (words, prefixes, etc) that were originally borrowed from romance languages like french and latin, as well as greek and other foreign loanwords, keeping only those of germanic origin.
What happens is an english which is for the most part intelligible, but since a lot everyday english, and especially the scientific vocabulary, has has heavy latin and greek influence, they have to make up new words from the existing germanic-english vocabulary. For me it kind of reads super viking-ey.
Anyway when you read this article on atomic theory, in Anglish called Uncleftish Beholding, you get this text which kind of reads like a fantasy novel. Like in my mind it feels like it recontextualizes advanced scientific concepts to explain it to a viking audience from ancient times.
Even though you're familiar with the scientific ideas, because it bypasses the normal language we use for these concepts, you get a chance to examine these ideas as if you were a visitor from another civilization - and guess what, it does feel like it's about magic. It has a mythical quality to it, like it feels like a book about magic written during viking times. For me this has the same vibe as reading deep magic lore from a Robert Jordan book.

Y'know. There were several ups and downs when I was working for the mouse, and the downs were always really, really bad. But like also I'm glad for them because four years ago I absolutely would not have said SHIT about being given a shift that conflicts with my availability and just worked it hoping it never happened again. Now I will talk to all four fucking managers who work throughout the entire day I've been here until one of them listens instead of pushing back and getting pissy about me saying it's not my fault and sure, I'll try to find coverage to be nice, but not my fucking problem if I can't find it, can't work the shift, they can't mark me as a no show and they can die mad about it because they should've thought about it before giving me a shift I can't work 🤷
#vent#obvs i said all that in more professional language#but like i was fucking firm about it that yeah i'll humor them and ask around but that's also not my job bc it wasn't my mistake#so if they end up understaffed sucks to suck. only so much i can do if everyone i talked to was booked and busy#not my fault some idiot who makes more than me to do one single task on a 9-2 schedule weekdays only didn't have her shit together#anyways i am Proud of myself bc i no longer take shit#sucks that it took those lows to get to this point but y'know what? i'm grateful#wish i could've learned these lessons a different way#obvs. but i am glad that i did learn them#anyways today sucked but i got almost 7.5 paid hours instead of the 6.5 i was originally supposed to get so ✌️#somewhat makes up for me needing to call out last sunday lmao#also i put up with soooo much shit i am a Team Player if i refuse to back down and choose a hill to die on it means smth to me#extend me to a 10 and a half hour shift and only take a 30 meal break instead of the hour i'm entitled to?#yeah okay sure more money and the break schedule is already fucked so i don't wanna screw over everybody else#gotta clock in half an hour early and stay twenty minutes late? no problem i'm here may as well. plus money#need me to train someone when i only restarted here 2 months ago 4 years after the last time i worked here? sure. why not.#blind leading the goddamn blind and all that but like i also know what situations ppl have gotten most pissed at me in#so lemme teach you how to do some of the shit nobody explains the way they need to#so if i call out it's bc my legs well and truly WILL give the fuck out if i try to stand on them for longer than 5 mins#and if i say i shouldn't be the one to fix their mistake but i'll try a lil. i am a nice person i am a team player i can and will take shit#from them but also i am not a goddamn pushover#i know my limits and i know my worth

#rat rambles#splat posting#she doesnt bring it up too much on her own but if you give her reason to? oh boy#she also gives me big cant read fiction because she gets annoyed by it being too unrealistic vibes#in a world building sense I mean. she doesnt get that not everyone has read every history book in every library theyve ever been to#shiver on the other had knows bits and pieces of some rly specific ass history from catastrophic 3am autism events#big man barely passed most of his classes but hey hes stumbled (lied) his way into knowing like 5 languages so thats smth#frye like half knows a few languages that she took classes for in highschool and both she and shiver know at least 2 languages#I imagine inkling and octarian dont rly fully exist as seperate languages in their home town but they all have their own family dialects of#the amalgamation of the two#big man's family have mostly maintained their original language but theyve definitely influenced the local inkfish language as well#shiver and frye both know both languages along with enough of common octarian and inkling to sound normal enough to both#frye also half knows a couple different inkfish languages from other countries but isnt anywhere near fluent in any of them#mostly because she got a lil too ambitious with taking langauge classes in highschool and got mega burnt out lol
